Migration Media Award 2019

The Migration Media Award (MMA) was created to recognise excellence, relevance, and newsworthiness of journalism pieces contributing to balance the narrative on migration in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The long term objective of the MMA is to foster coverage and reward outstanding pieces of journalistic work on migration issues, recognising the role media play in balancing the current narrative on migration.

The communication on migration has become an increasingly important priority in the framework of EU financed initiatives. The current discourse on migration has taken a dramatically negative turn both within Europe and internationally, demanding a review of how information pertaining to migration is gathered, shared, disseminated and communicated in different contexts.

For its first edition in 2017, the MMA rewarded 35 journalists based in an EU country or a Southern Partner Country (SPC). 41 were rewarded for the MMA’s second edition in 2018. All journalists had their winning stories published on www.migration-media-award.eu

In line with the quality and number of applications received last year, the 2019 edition will reward up to 48 published stories resulting from time-intensive, un-sensationalistic, in-depth reporting and contributing to balance the narrative on migration, making it evidence-based, nuanced and less polarising. The competition is open to all media outlets and journalists covering migration on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea.
